Romeo and Juliet 2010: Such Tweet Sorrow

As of today the Royal Shakespeare Company is retelling the story of Romeo and Juliet. According to the Guardian the entire tweeting experience will take five weeks and approximately 4,000 tweets.

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has teamed up with cross-platform production firm Mudlark to launch Such Tweet Sorrow. A drama, told in real-time based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

The story is set in a modern setting with Juliet being the daughter of a successful property developer. Her mother died in a car driven by the artist Montague. You get the picture right? The father doesn't stand Montague, so chances are he won't like his son.

There are more characters in it obviously, but I suggest you check out the website of 'Such Tweet Sorrow' for the full cast. The whole story will be played out by a cast of six actors.

So far I haven't seen Romeo on Twitter yet, but Juliet has already tweeted some stuff and even put a film up on YouTube.

Tjongolongo, I love this idea of bringing theatre to the online community. If you can't get the people to the theatre, bring the theatre to them! It just goes to show that if you think outside the box, you can get some cool new ideas.

It's also a great example of how Social Media can be for more than just businesses or friends. To me Social Media and theatre are a lot alike actually. Theatre for me is about connecting people, connecting them with that what the artist have to say, in this case connect people with Shakespeare and the story. Social Media is all about connecting people as well.

By performing this story on Twitter the RSC gives a new dimension to the story. People can actually follow the actors in real-time and perhaps even comment on their story. It brings the story even closer.

Square eco-friendly Coke bottle the future?

Designer Andrew Seunghyun Kim has created a new packaging design for Coca Cola bottles.

The interesting thing about his new design is the fact that the bottles are square and 100% eco-friendly.

According the the designer's website the new bottle has a 25% slimmer cap, is 27% more efficient, has a collapsable design, is 100% plant based and stackable.

Tjongolongo, I think this design is definitely worth considering for Coke. Maybe not to replace the classic Coca Cola bottle (immediately), but it's worth considering for some of their other drinks.

I really think Coke shouldn't let this one slide. If picked up correctly they've got a nice new way of putting themselves out there as an eco-friendly company. Could make for some interesting marketing campaigns!

That's what the folks over at Blendtec (a company that sells blenders) were wondering. So as soon as they got their hands on an iPad, they took out their sturdy Blendtec Total blender and started blending!

Tjonoglongo, the things people come up with! Blending the iPad isn't actually the only thing that Blendtec has ever blended, they've blended everything from normal drinks, to iPhones to Facebook.

Why? you ask, the official reason, I don't know, but I think it's perhaps their way to show that their blenders can blend anything.

I think it's a very creative marketing strategy from the people over at Blendtec. When you're competing in a market filled with blenders that can all basically do the same, how do you differentiate yourself? What is the message that you want to get across to your audience and how will you get it across?

From what I can see, their message is 'Blendtec blenders are powerful, durable and can blend anything'. The way to get that message across is by asking yourself the question with every product you come across 'Will it blend?'.

And I can see that from an online point of view it works, their 'Will it blend' iPad video alone has already been watched over 31,500 times in a day. They've got a blog, are on Twitter and their Facebook page has over 18,000 fans. They are really engaging with their fans on Facebook and Twitter as well. As far as I can see they're ticking all the Social Media boxes.

I think that they've come up with a very creative way to distinguish themselves in their market. It just goes to show that no matter what your product is, you can always find a unique way to market your product. You just have to think outside the box.

Aluminum foil chair that sticks to your bum

Tjongolongo I have come a cross yet another interesting design. This time it's a chair made out of aluminum foil.

Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka has designed the 'memory' chair, a chair that can be shaped in any form you like. The designer has developed a special fabric made with recycled aluminum to create the chair.

Because of it's unusual fabric the chair is able to transform and memorise the shape you created.

Tjongolongo, how weird and yet cool is that! A chair that is able to take your 'shape'. In theory it sounds like a comfortable chair, but just looking at the pictures I wonder how comfortable it'll actually be in real life.

I have to say, that yet again I think this design could be an inspiration for many a marketing and communications professional. I could see this chair being used in a campaign for a trendy product.

How not to sell a blade sharpener

My first tjongolongo moment of the week has been supplied by a Russian home shopping channel. A presenter manages to prove the shopping channel stereotype that people have of the advertising of products on the infomercials being doggy.

The shopping channel presenter and his female colleague are demonstrating a very useful blade sharpener. You know how it goes, first the presenter show just how difficult it is to cut through a piece of paper with a dull pair of scissors.

Next up is his lovely female colleague showing us that by just going across the blade sharpener a couple of times the scissors's blade will be sharpened.

Finally she hands over the scissors to her colleague and he shows just how easy it is to cut through the piece of paper now.

It all sounds fairly okay now doesn't it? The only thing the presenters forgot is that they weren't being filmed in close up. So the fact that the guy reaches over to get a completely new pair of scissors while his colleague is demonstrating how to sharpen the old on doesn't really go unnoticed… (0.51sec)

To make matters even worse his colleague doesn't even place the old pair of scissors near the new one, but somewhere else on the table. (0.59sec)

Tjongolongo?! How on earth could you mess up something simple as that. And why are people (obviously) still demonstrating stuff like this? Either show us that the product works or just cancel the product, don't sell us stuff that doesn't' work!

It's bad for your brand. Why do you think so many home shopping channels make people think they sell doggy stuff? Because they sell it like this! I do think it's a shame that things like this happen. I also think that if you can sell whilst presenting at a home shopping channel, you can sell anything. It takes some special skill to do this. I know I couldn't do it!

I wonder if there will ever be a home shopping channel of which (you think) you can actually buy something useful? What do you think?

How to make a painting come to life?

What would it be like if a painting actually came to life? Artist Alexa Meade has actually created an answer to that question. She has decided to paint portaits on people instead of canvas. She started painting on 'life' subjects in 2009 and has been developing her invented technique ever since.

According to her website the following is stated about her art: "Typically a painting is an artist's interpretation of the subject painted onto another surface. In Alexa's paintings, she creates her artistic interpretation of the subject directly on top of the subject itself. Essentially, her art imitates life - on top of life"

She has already had her painted models exhibited in galleries. If you've missed it and still like to see her 'paintings', you can, from April 2 to May 9 she'll be exhibiting limited edition prints in New York City at Postmasters Gallery. She'll also be showing her artwork in the Saatchi Gallery in London for the 'Art of Giving' show in October.

When I saw Alexa's paintings for the first time I immediately went 'tjongolongo?!'. These paintings are so cool and creative, just looking at them on my computer screen makes my creative juices flowing, let alone when you see them in real life.

I would, for example, love to see these paintings in the shop windows on the highstreet, with the high fashion clothing painted on life models. That would be a nice piece of marketing communications to get attention for your brand. I would defenitely stop and stare for a second to see what's going on.

It could also be a cool part of a marketing communications campaign to bring art back to the people on the street. Paint models and just set them 'loose' somewhere in the city and make them meet somewhere to 'become' the painting they're meant to be together.

And many more ideas come mind.

Stickybits: How a barcode becomes a very cool online message board

What if walls could talk? Ever wondered what they'd say? Well, maybe now you can find out. No, I'm not saying someone found a way to get a wall to talk, but someone did find a way to tag it with a barcode.

Stickybits
Not just any barcode, a Stickybits barcode. Stickybits is an app for the iPhone and Android that lets you scan any barcode and attach a message to it. You can stick that barcode on the wall, in a book, in the toilet of your favourite club, on a bench in the park, or wherever you like.

Other people with an iPhone or Android can in turn scan that Stickbits barcode and see the message you left behind.

Attach anything you like to whatever you like
You can attach photos, videos, music, text, pdfs, zips and more to any barcode. You can buy vinyl stickers from Stickybits with your barcode on it to stick anywhere you want.You can even print your barcode on things like t-shirts, mugs, hats, shoes and office supplies.

Use it for whatever you like
Tjongolongo, when I first heard about this on the radio, I thought wow, that can be useful as well as fun! I mean, I can stick a barcode on the back of my business card and attach my resume to it.

The Stickybits website also suggest you stick a barcode in a birthday card with a video message attached in which you wish the receiver a happy birthday. Or you can attach photos of what you're selling to a flyer. The ideas are endless. I can even feel an idea coming up in my head for companies to use barcodes in their marketing campaigns.

Why not leave a message for me now?
I think the Stickybits are really cool and I would love to use them, however, at the moment I don't own an iPhone (yet) or an Android. I still want to try it out though that's why I've downloaded a barcode from the Stickybits website attached a message to it and put it in the sidebar of my blog.

What will Google TV be?

Last week everybody was all excited about Google TV. I saw many sites announcing this new and exciting Google project and even heard about it on TV and the radio.

At first I thought, Tjongolongo, how cool is that but than I realised that the one place I didn't hear anything from was Google itself. I haven't been able to find anything on their site nor have I been able to find any other official statement from their 'partners' (Sony and Intel).

They say Google TV will bring us the following:

Surf online video
An interface to access popular social sites like Twitter
Browse photos on sharing sites like Google Picasa

That all sounds very nice, but doesn't really excite me yet. For now it just sounds like you'll have a computer connected to a TV screen. I can do that now.

What I would like to see in Google TV

Personalisation
I would love to have a sort of 'start' channel where I can put all my favourite TV shows and internet apps on. Like you can make your own internet start page with iGoogle now.
Integration
If they can somehow integrate television into your website. That would be cool as well, maybe add a widget with your own talkshow to your site.
Broadcasting voor all
Create your own television show which can be broadcasted on Google TV. Just like you can search short videos on YouTube, you can search television shows whether made by professionals or amateurs on Google TV.

What will Google TV be? I have no idea, only Google knows and they're not saying anything at the moment.

I am quite curious to find out what they're up to in that department. I'm sure (or at least hoping really hard) that it's more than what other sites are claiming it to be.

I just hope they won't connect it with Gmail and flood my sent mail with e-mails like Google Buzz is doing at the moment….(those currently using Google Buzz know what I'm talking about)

Heineken tricks football fans into visiting a classical music concert

Imagine that on the day of the big match of your favourite sport you have been talked into going to a classical music concert instead.

That's exactly what happened in Italy for many football (aka soccer if you're from the US) fans. Watching football is one of the most sacred moments guys have left with their friends, but that moment is increasingly at risk. Heineken staged this event to highlight that fact. They picked the Champions League match of AC Milan vs Real Madrid, one of the most important matches to watch for any football fan, and came up with this…

With the help of 200 accomplices (girlfriends, professors etc.) they managed to persuade over 1000 AC Milan fans to go to a classical music concert instead of watching the big game.

Over a 1000 football fans entered the classical music concert and I suggest you check the video below to see what happened next:

Tjonogolongo! How cool is that! I would've loved to have been there to see their reaction myself.

I think this event is an incredibly creative stunt by Heineken. This event was part of their campaign that focuses on the fact that it's getting more an more difficult for men to watch the sacred football match with their friends.

In my opinion Heineken did a very good job in creating an event for their target group to influence them about their brand. By filming it as well they're also making the most of this event in Social Media land.

All in all, I like it! What about you?

Imagine what it would be like to sit comfortably on a sofa whilst waiting for your train to come into the subway station.

In Paris they can now. From March 10-24 IKEA has transformed a couple of subway stations in Paris to showrooms. The stations are filled with home furnishings such as couches, chairs and lamps. They've even decorated the walls with huge posters to showcase the IKEA interiors.

Tjongolongo, how cool is that! IKEA is getting quite creative with their campaigns lately. I loved their creative Facebook campaign and I love this one as well!

They have created unique content to get their message across to the right person to influence them about your their brand in a very cool way.

IKEA is affordable and for everyone, what better way to showcase their stuff than the subway station!

I have already covered Marketing and Communications. The next article in my 'What is' series is, 'What is Marketing Communications?'

I frequently get asked the question, if it isn't Marketing nor Communications, than what is it?

As with Marketing and Communications there are a lot of definitions out there on the topic.

According to Wikipedia Marketing Communications are messages and related media used to communicate with a market.

Sounds nice, but to me, Marketing Communications is:
The content you create to get your message across to the right person to influence them about your brand's reputation.

Once you know who your target group is (Marketing) and you know what you want to get across (Communications). It's time to take action (Marketing Communications).

With Marketing Communications you create the actual content to communicate your brand. No matter if it's a strategy, an activity, using a tool or a tactic, if the intend is to get your message across to your target group, you're practicing Marketing Communications.

Why Lady Gaga's Telephone reminds me of Michael Jackson's Thriller

The first thing that sprang to mind even before clicking on Lady Gaga's Telephone music video was Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Length
I remember how unusual it was at the time to have a 14 minute music video but Michael Jackson made it anyway. Lady Gaga's video is 'only' 9 minutes compared to MJ's 14, but still, it's quite long.

Story
What both videos also have in common is the fact that they actually tell a story from beginning to end. They are more like short films rather than a music video.

Moves
Lady Gaga's Telephone music video even has some moves in it that remind me of Michael Jackson's Thriller. I see the same sort of ' hand' movement. Even the background dancers where ripped up clothing in both videos (in that shot). Than again, it could be a coincidence.

Michael Jackson - Thriller

Lady Gaga ft. Beyonce - Telephone

Appearance
Both change appearances in their videos. Michael Jackson turns into a zombie and Lady Gaga changes her appearance many times from prisoner to chef to whatever.

Marketing
Both Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga did some extra marketing for their music videos. MJ released a ' Making of' video at the same time as he release thriller. It became the top-selling-home-video release of all time at one point (source: Wikipedia).

Lady Gaga did some marketing before hand and posted stills from the music video on her website. Which made her audience even more curious about her new video. I love the way how she uses Social Media to inform her audience. Even in times like this when a lot of people are downloading illegally she has managed to get her fans to buy her albums.

Conclusion
I have to say that in no way shape or form I'm trying to compare the two artist with each other on a musical level. That's not possible, they are both two different people, there is only one Lady Gaga and there has always been only one Michael Jackson. I just see some similarities in their two music videos. For me, Lady Gaga's Telephone took me back to Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Tjongolongo, wouldn't it have been something to have seen the two collaborate. I would've loved to see what two creative minds like that would've come up with.

Funny parody posters of Oscar movies

In case you missed it, the Oscars were handed out last Sunday. As with all things nowadays anything remotely serious will get a parody. And the 10 Oscar nominees for Best Picture all got a parody poster made by College Humor as well.

They have actually done a really nice job, at first glance the posters look like the original movie posters, but when you take a closer look you'll see that the titles and the tag lines have been edited. All titles and tag lines have actually been edited in such a way that the poster now actually says what the movie is about, for example, Inglourious Basterds has been renamed 'Inacurate Trailer' and Avatar has been renamed 'Predictable.

The thing I really like about these posters is that at first glance you think it's something serious. It just goes to show that good design does a lot for a poster, but it's the copy that gets you in the end! Because all the movies have been marketed so much, if one poster was replaced by one of the parodies, you probably wouldn't have noticed it.

Tjongolongo,it takes some creative thinking to come up with this. I do think that if you're on a roll all the titles and tag lines will come naturally. I'm sure that whoever made these had a nice laugh whilst creating them.

I was actually searching the web and my brain for an interesting story and was just about to write something about the Oscars 2010 goodie bag when I came across the nacho cheese flavoured lip balm. I immediately went Tjongolongo?! Who on earth would want to use that?

I saw the lip balm on Alltop.com but, when clicking a bit further I landed on the Archie McPhee site. The site contains more of the strange flavoured lip balm, like corn dog, wasabi and bacon. Not only that, they also have another bunch of weird stuff like eggnog soap and frosting flavoured cupcake floss.

Tjongolongo, how weird is that?! And how funny. I'm sure there are people out there that would buy this kind of stuff. I don't think the Oscar goodie bag will have a nacho cheese flavoured lip balm though. Who knows if they've got a Mojito flavoured lip balm in the future, I might try it!

Granny DJ rocks the clubs in Paris

British DJ Ruth Flowers is a 69 year-old grandmother that is currently spinning her tunes in Paris nightclubs.

She first came across the club scene after going to her grandson's birthday party. She said: "I went along quite late and the gentlemen at the door said, 'I don't think you want to go in there, Madame'. And I said, 'Well I rather think I do'," she said.
"I went in and it was very noisy and the lights were flashing, but there was an awful lot of energy and joy."

That night she became so enthusiastic she decided to start DJ-ing herself. A friend put her in touch with French producer Aurelien Simon. He taught here all about how to DJ and has helped her develop her own style. It took her four years, but she learned it and is now busy DJ-ing in French clubs.

She not only DJs as a proper DJ, she also looks the part with her satin green bomber jacket and huge shades. A great sample of good communications, not only is she influencing people by talking about her DJ-ing, she also looks the part!

As she says herself: "It's a little glammy, a bit over the top, but it fits the bill I think," she said of her outfits. "I mean, if I appeared in a cardigan, a sweater and brogue shoes it wouldn't be quite the same."

And she's absolutely right!

Tjongolongo, I thought it was cool when I was dancing with my 85 year-old grandma, mom, aunt and cousins to I gotta feeling from the Black Eyed Peas (trying to do the Oprah flashmob choreography). This definitely tops it though. Tjongolongo, this granny is cool, I hope she keeps spinning for many years to come!

The city of Topeka, Kansas in United States has changed its name to Google, Kansas for the next month.

By changing the name they are hoping to be chosen by Google for Google's broadband experiment.

Tjongolongo, how weird is that! An entire city that what's to be part of an experiment so badly it decides to change its name!

I think that this is a nice example of the influence Google has on people. Google's Communications department has done an excellent job. They have been able to influence Google's reputation by not only saying things about the Google, but also showing it. Everything Google does is in a Google way, from the way they built their offices to the way the push out new products.

Over the years Google has gotten into the minds of people in a positive way. In Topeka, Kansas they have even gotten one resident, 26-year-old Jared Starkey so positive about Google and its new service that he decided to suggest to change the town's name to Google.

Not only has he done that he has also started the website 'Think Big Topeka' as well as organize a flash mob and start a Facebook fan page to get Google's Fiber Experiment to Topeka.

I think it's great to see the effort a city is putting in to get chosen by Google. I've read that other cities have also started fan pages, but I haven't heard of one changing its name to get Google's attention!

I wish Google, Kansas, formerly known as Topeka, Kansas, all the best in their challenge to be one of the 'chosen ones'.

Last week I let you know my view on what Marketing is, this week I'll tell you what I think Communications is.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that Marketing and Communications are one and the same, however this is not true.

According to Wikipedia, Communications is:
A process of transferring information from one entity to another.

The Wiki statement is true, but when it comes to businesses to me it's more than just transferring information. In my opinion, the transferring of information has a goal, namely, reputation management.

To me, Communications is:
"Influencing (people about) a brand's reputation by not only saying things about the brand, but also showing it."

What I mean with that, is that it's not good enough just to use your standard communication tools when working in the field of communications. You also have to make sure your company communicates your message through and through, this can be done by office decor, a corporate dress code, the way you treat your clients, the look and feel of company cars etc.

Communications encompasses everything that communicates whether it's what you say to other people about your brand or what you let them they see. In this case a brand can be anything, a person, a company, a product, etc.

Influencing plays a big part in Communications, because once you are able to influence your internal and external target groups the way you want you have reached effective communications. You will hopefully have created people that will speak about your brand to others in a positive way and in turn influence others.

To me, that's what the end result of effective communications is all about, influencing people to say what you want them to say. You want them to get the message and pass it on.

Whilst searching for a nice marketing example for my last article during my marketing week I got came across an article about baby names in Britain

TheBabyWebsite.com has done a survey on the most bizarre names in Britain today. Names they found included: Stan Still, Mary Christmas, Paige Turner, Chris Cross, Barry Cade, Sonny Day, Rose Bush, Pearl Button and Hazel Nutt

They also uncovered a few American names which included: Anna Prentice, Annette Curtain, Bill Board and Carrie Oakey

When I read the story and saw the names, I thought, tjongolongo! The parents that came up with this should get a little marketing lesson. As I said, to me, marketing is 'do the research to say the right thing to the right person'.

The most important part of that definition is the beginning, DO THE RESEARCH! I urge all expecting parents to think long and hard and also write down the full names of their future child before making it official.

Unless of course, you've got a weird sense of humor, then of course you can still name your child something like Hazel when your last name is Nutt. In fact, why not call your child Hazel Emily Louise Lorraine Olivia Nutt, her initials will then be H.E.L.L.O. Nutt, but you can just call her Hazel Nutt. Than again, she might just take her name and put it to her advantage, time will tell.

Marketing is not just for those people working in the field, marketing is something for everyone. Whatever you do, in whatever situation, you should always do the research to try and say the right thing to the right person. Including when picking a name for your child.

Since this is my 'What is Marketing' week I thought a sample of a good marketing campaign would be nice.

Forbes recently ranked Cleveland as the most miserable city in America. Positively Cleveland, Cleveland's Tourism Board, didn't like this and got a bunch of improv people together and created a funny marketing campaign.

According to Tami Brown, Positively Cleveland's vice president of marketing, the day the article came out they started working on a video to counteract Forbes' statement.

The video contains a bunch of actors complaining about things in Cleveland which are generally positive, but they perceive as miserable. For example, one lady is waiting at the elevator still doing her hair and make-up because the commute to work was too short to do it in the car whilst going to work. You've also got kids complaining that they're getting too many educational trips to the zoo etc.

I think this is a really nice marketing campaign by Postively Cleveland. They did their research (Forbes claiming that they're the most miserable city in America) and they are now saying the right thing (Cleveland isn't that miserable at all) to the right people (people who think that Cleveland is a miserable city).

Not only did they do this, they also did it quickly using new media such as YouTube to post the video etc. and they created the site whattheforbes.com to which Cleveland citizens can post their positive photos and videos about Cleveland. They even have a chance to win one of three prize packages with Cleveland gifts.

They may be called the most miserable city in America, but marketing wise, I personally think they're not doing so miserable at all! What do you think?

That is a question I've recently been asking myself a lot lately. Seeing the words Marketing, Communications and Branding used as if they are all the same makes me go Tjongolongo, so I decided to write down my own definitions. First up: ‘What is Marketing’

You only have to Google the word marketing and you'll quickly learn all about the 4 P's (Product, Promotion, Price and Placement). Many (huge) books have been written on the subject explaining every little marketing bit in detail.

One of the most well-known definition of marketing is by Kotler:
"Marketing is the social process by which individuals and groups obtain what they need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others"

Me, personally, I like to keep things short. To me, marketing is:
"Do the research to say the right thing to the right person."

Marketing to me is all about the customers. In order to reach your customer (or client), you will need to research your product to see in which market it belongs and research your market to see which customer is in it. Based on that information you can write down a marketing strategy to say the right thing to the right person.

In a nutshell, that's what Marketing is to me. If you're looking for a long definition of marketing, check out the MarketingProfs website, they have a lot of useful marketing information.

Yep, I found another strangely made sculpture. This time it's a Gorilla statue made out of hundreds of recycled coat hangers that made me go tjongolongo!

The sculpture was made by artist David Mach. The Gorilla wasn't the only sculpture made by the artist, he also created an Astronaut and a couple of other statues. I really like the gorilla though! I'm always amazed by what people can make out of disposable material.

I know that I've said it before, but sculptures and creations like this always make me urge communications departments to take a look at how they can use these artists creativity into their campaigns etc.

Seeing things like this should just make people feel creative, even if it’s just for a second!

French artist Baptiste Ddebombourg has created this amazing piece of art. He has used 35,000 actual staples to create this. Tjongolongo, I wonder how many hours it took him to do this!

It looks amazing, the things people can do with staples. It's a nice display for staples manufacturers, perhaps some nice creative marketing and communications activities can be created by using this piece of art as inspiration.

I always love art like this. Something new created out of something ordinary.

I came across this cool looking curtain put together by loads of Kodachrome slides.

The curtain really made me go Tjongolongo! I think this is a very cool and creative way of using up old slides like this. If you own a photo shop it would make for a nice window display as well. A nice bit of marketing.

The slides date from the 50s and early 60s. In each slide 8 holes were drilled and the slides were than connected together using aluminum chainmail rings.

Tjongolongo, I really love these Kodachrome curtains, I might try something out like that myself one time!

An airline has decorated one of its planes as an idiot's guide to aviation. It's written on the plane where the captain is located and where the front door is etc.

Not only have they labeled all things, they even included some funny remarks. They even have directions to the toilet saying 'mile-high initiation chamber'. Tjongolongo, how funny would it be to see this plane in real life!

The plane is of Kululu Airlines and its unique branding is part of their strategy to demystify air travel of their fans according to their marketing manager Nadine Damen.

I think this airplane is hilarious and I'm quite interested to know what it'll look like on the inside. If they have managed to take this 'Flying 101' theme indoors as well I definitely want to see it for myself!

Google Buzz - the latest social media tool

Yep, Google has entered the Social Media arena. They have created Google Buzz, a new way to share updates, photos, videos and more. Google Buzz is integrated into Gmail and automatically lets you follow the people you e-mail the most.

As with most Social Media tools you can start conversations, comment and like or dislike a post. All the information you share on Google Buzz is updated in real-time though.

Tjongolongo, yet another Social Media tool, I'm not sure whether it's a good thing or a bad thing. It's an interesting one though, I will take a look at it as soon as my account is Buzz ready. I don't know if I'll be a 'Buzzer' and start ‘buzzing’ though, it all depends on how many of my friends will be using the tool as well.

I do think this tool has a lot of potential though. The fact that it's integrated into Gmail is a BIG plus for me (that's one feature I currently miss with Google Wave!). I also like the fact that you can flick through photo's easily and quickly. The fact that it's very easy to choose who you want to share your content with whether it's publicly or privately to a customised group it's very easy just pick and click.

You can also use Google Buzz on your mobile phone. The Buzz application will even locate where you are and can include it in your post. The interesting bit about this is that you will also be able to see the buzz around you. If other people have been buzzing publicly around your location you can check out what they have been buzzing about.

Now if only they can integrate Buzz and Gmail with Wave, that would definitely make me go tjongolongo!

Swedish viral digital specialist DRAFTFCB has created (according to their website) the most successful global viral interactive film ever.

They have created a ' Hero' video which has had over 14 million unique visits within 8 weeks.

Tjongolongo, I personally think it's a really cool video and can see why it has had so many visits. I think it's an interesting way of viral marketing and am pleased to see that even though it's in Swedish it has still become a global hit. It just goes to show that good Social Media marketing can cross any boundary as long as it's done properly!

I came across this photo of a woman in a transparent suitcase. It is an ad by Amnesty International to increase awareness to stop human trafficking. They've taken 'human trafficking’ quite literal and actually put a woman in a suitcase and put her on a baggage carousel at a German airport. They added stickers on the suitcase stating 'stop human trafficking'.

Tjongolongo! I think this is a very cool and creative way for creating awareness for an important case (no pun intended) like this.

If you like these images, I suggest you also check out the video on the site of Serviceplan.de, the agency that created the ad. Just search for Amnesty International on their SPTV channel.

A Japanese company, Oriental, has created a machine that can actually turn waste office paper into rolls of toilet paper.

The machine will shred the waste office paper, mixes it with water and pulps it. After turning the paper in to pulp the machine will flatten it and dry it before making rolls of toilet paper out of it. How weird is that?

And how cool, tjongolongo! All companies should have something like that, at least all that wasted office paper is put to good use and you'll probably never run out of toilet paper!

I think this invention is a great example of turning something that a lot of companies are dealing with, loads of wasted office paper, into something they can use, toilet paper!

What I really like about this, is that not only did someone think of the idea, but they actually made it work!

I do wonder if companies will actually start installing a machine like this though and whether or not people will use the toilet paper.

Guy gets train logo tattooed for free tickets

Australian Grant Burton has had the logo of a train company tattooed on his back for his parents. He wanted to give his parents something special for their 40th wedding anniversary. The only problem was the fact that he is unemployed, which meant he didn't have much cash.

Since he knew that one of his parent's wishes was to go to Europe he decided to contact train company EuRail and asked them he they could give them two tickets if he did something crazy to promote their brand.

And something crazy he did indeed. He decided to tattoo their logo and website on his back. The company agreed to this crazy idea! Tjongolongo…

'Color Picker' - a pen that picks the colour of objects

A pen that can pick the colour of an object just by placing the pen on the object and pressing the scan button, that's the 'Color Picker'. Tjongolongo, how cool is that?

I came across this concept and was immediately intrigued. Designer Jinsun Park has created this innovative design of a concept pen that can scan colours from any object and immediately picks the colour of the object for drawing.

The pen detects the colour with a special colour sensor and a RGB cartridge inside the pen will mix it correct colour for you to use.

I think this is an amazing concept. Depending on the quality of the product it can be an interesting new tool for artists, being able to use the exact colour of something they want to draw.

I can see a use for this myself. When looking for something in a specific colour for example. I've had many times when I saw a colour on one object and wanted another object in that exact same colour. When I was in a different store it was always difficult to remember that exact colour. With a pen like this in hand, I could just, pick that colour, draw it on a piece of paper and take it with me to another shop!

And that's just one thing I would use a pen like this for. I sure do hope that they'll make this pen a reality.

Well, it’s official, Apple has launched its latest project, the iPad. The iPad is a new tablet created by Apple, it was rumoured to be an iPhone on steroids and well, it sure looks like it is!

There was no way around it today, everywhere I looked online today, I saw iPad, iPad, iPad. Even flicking through a few channels on the television I came across news about Apple’s latest piece of technology.

The iPad has many different features, including:
Internet – You can browse the Internet with Safari. The tablet can actually show the webpage as an actual page if you hold it in portrait.
Mail – You can check your mail in ways you never could before, whether it’s landscape or portrait, the iPad will adjust itself to your liking.
Photos – You can flick through your albums quickly and even use the iPad as a digital photo frame while it’s docked or charging.
Video – The iPad has a nice large high-resolution screen which makes it ideal to watch videos. If you use the YouTube app, it even organizes videos for easy navigation and viewing.
iPod – With the iPod app you can browse through your entire music library. You can even access the iTunese store and buy music, tv-shows, podcast etc.
App Store- iPad will run almost 140,000 apps from the App Store.

iBooks – This is a new app by Apple. The iBooks app will enable you to buy and read books on the iPad.
Maps – You can see the entire world either in satellite or street view images and search for locations and directions.
Notes – The iPad has a nice large, on-screen keyboard which makes it easy to make notes.
Calendar – The iPad comes with a Calendar and will even show multiple calendars at once if needed.
Contacts – You can easily browse through your contacts on the iPad.

I personally love almost all thing Apple and this is yet another thing that I’m probably going to love. I first need to get my hands on one though. Prices are not as bad as I though they would be, starting at $499,-

I like Apple for a few reasons, one of them being the way they design their products whether it’s the software or the hardware, it always looks great and simple (I like simple). They also try their hardest to make things as easy to use as possible and they usually succeed in doing so.

Another reason why I like Apple is their marketing and communications style. They can get many people hyped up about something weeks before it’s launched and the way they present their products is always very slick and simple (did I mention I like simple?). They always get people to go tjongolongo when they present their latest product.

The iPad is yet another nice piece of design and marketing both of which made me go tjongolongo!

Seven-year-old raises over £100,000 for Haiti

A seven-year-old boy in the UK has raised more than £100,000 for Haiti by riding a couple of laps on his bike. The boy, Charlie Simpson, was so upset after seeing the devastation caused by the earthquake that he told his mother that he wanted to do something for the survivors.

He decided to try and raise £500 for Unicef's Haiti appeal by riding his bike 5 miles around his local park.

A page was created for him on JustGiving.com, a site that helps ordinary people raise extraordinary amounts for charity. All donations made through his section on the website will go to Unicef.

I think it's amazing to see how everybody, no matter what age, is going out of their way to help raise money for Haiti.

He may have set out to raise £500, but his efforts inspired many people to donate money online. Within one day he raised more than £60,000 and the donations keep coming in. Last time I checked he already reached over £100,000, tjongolongo, how cool is that!

What girl wouldn't love a pair of chocolate stilettos! A cake maker in the UK has created a very cool collection of chocolate shoes.

The cake maker, Frances Cooley, found the shoe mould in Belgium and decide to develop her own collection by hand. As you can imagine the shoes are a hit, it's a perfect gift for women, chocolate and a stiletto all in one! Not only does she make the shoes, she also creates chocolate handbags. tjongologo, how cool is that!

I think it's really nice how a cake maker can get inspired by a shoe mould and basically put herself on the (cake) map with something unique. A nice piece of marketing without trying!

I wouldn't mind getting a pair of these stiletto's with a matching handbag, it would almost be a shame to eat them though...

Swedish scientist have developed a dinner plate that will actually speak to you when you're eating too fast.

The Mandometer is an electronic scal which will fit under a plate and has a separate small screen. The food is weighed before you start eating. As you start to eat you will be able to see on the screen how fast you're eating. If you're eating too fast the plate will tell you to slow down.

The Mandometer was developed for overweight people to train them to eat more slowly so that they will feel 'full' quicker and eat less, resulting in weight loss.

Tjongolongo, how weird is that! I don't think I'll be buying a plate like this anytime soon. If anybody should tell me that I'm eating too fast that it definitely shouldn't be a plate! When I was a kid I actually ate very slowly and was always the last to finish. I wonder if I had one of those plates back than if it would ask 'Is anybody still eating??'

I do think it's an interesting invention though, I wonder if it will really help people to lose weight though. In the end losing weight is for 80% a case of will power.

Designer Daizi Zheng has designed a mobile phone of which the battery can be powered by a soft drink. Tjongolongo, how cool is that! She designed the phone battery for Nokia.

According to her site, the concept is based on the idea to create a pollution free environment by using bio-batteries as an alternative to conventional batteries.

The battery should be cheaper to produce, uses less production resource and is environmentally friendly. However, not only will the battery be environmentally friendly, after charging the battery should last 3 to 4 times the length of charging a normal battery.

Could soft drinks be the future of mobile phones? Who knows, personally, I like these kind of inventions and I hope that if Nokia doesn't do anything with the idea another phone company will, because it's just too good a concept to be left lying in the corner somewhere collecting dust.

It would be ideal if they can make a phone which can both be powered by electricity as well as soft drinks. That way you'll always have a way of charging your battery! It would also be an interesting piece of eco marketing if they can pull this off. The first eco-friendly mobile phone, powered by a soft drink!

I came across an article and video about this guy, Matthew, getting Ray-Bans tattooed on his face. Tjongolongo, how weird is that.

As you can imagine, the video has become viral lately. Tjongolongo, how on earth could you get someone to do something as ridiculous as this. I hope he got some good money out of it, but still, no amount of money could be worth glasses tattooed on your face could it?

It is an interesting piece of viral marketing for Ray Ban though. At least it gets fans talking about it on their Facebook page.

Lego recently released an official application for iPhone. The application turns photos into a Lego mosaic, that's it. Nothing more, nothing less.

I wonder how many fans this application will get. I mean it is a nice and fun application, but personally, when I think of Lego, I think of building things with Lego bricks.

I think it's nice to see how Lego is also trying out new things in the online and mobile world, but I do wonder if this really is the way to go. If I was working for Lego I would try to built (no pun intended...) on the whole brick building thing. That's essentially what a lot of people grew up with, building things with Lego, whether it was a car or a house or whatever, it's the building that creating that was fun.

Just looking at a picture being built up brick by brick with Lego just doesn't seem just as fun to me. The idea of an Lego app makes me go tjongolongo, but this one, not as much...

No Pants! Subway Ride 2010 goes around the world and viral in one day

Every year in January Improv Everywhere stages the No Pants! Subway Ride in New York City. This year the ninth ride took place on January 10, 2010. Next to organising it in New York City the organisation also encourages people in other cities around the world to stage their own ride on the same day.

The idea is simple, get a bunch of people, or as Improv Everywhere calls them 'undercover agents' to ride the subway without any pants on!

I have heard of the No Pants! Subway Ride before and have seen footage of the previous years, but this is the first year I actually noticed how the ride went viral on the web within 24 hours. Improv Everywhere hasn't even posted their own videos on their website yet, but already viral videos have popped up on YouTube showing people riding the subway with no pants on.

Below you can see a few of the videos that have popped up about No Pants! Subway Ride 2010 held in various cities around the world. None of them are official though. As soon as Improv Everywhere has posted their official video I'll update this post with the official video.

And when I say human shaped bed, I actually mean a bed shaped as a human! I came across this picture of a human shaped bed last month and it immediately made me go Tjongolongo and got me intrigued, why on earth somebody would make something like this!

It turns out the bed was made by British artist Dominic Wilcox. According to his website he works within the territory of 'everyday'. He takes everyday objects and creates something with a little bit of dry humor and adds a new perspective to those everyday objects. The human shaped bed was one of his first objects which he made in 1999 while at college. He used his own body as a template for the mattress.

I think this bed is really funny and I would like to see it for real once, it already looks weird in the picture, let alone how it would feel if you would lie on it!

It would be fun for a company that sells beds to have one in the store, I'm sure people would actually come to the store just to see this bed and lie in it for a sec, just to see how it feels. Would be another interesting marketing idea, but probably quite hard to achiev, you don't just make beds like this. You also might lose some clients though, seeing as this bed is for single people only! All in all I think this bed is a creative piece of art and should inspire any marketer in the business of selling beds!

A Swiss designer has created the 'Pee-lie Bin' a wheelie bin that doubles as a public toilet.

Tjongolongo, how weird is that! The Swiss designer, Stephan Bischof decided to transform the traditional British wheelie bin as a solution to the growing problem of public urination in the UK city centre streets.
Tests have even showed that people (mostly drunk ones...go figure...) were fine with peeing in the converted wheelie bins.

Tjongolongo, who on earth would actually put one of those bins outside this is just too weird!

I do think it's an interesting way of using a garbage can though. I keep being surprised with the things people come up with when looking at ordinary daily use objects. People that are in the business of selling objects people use daily should take a look around the web to see what’s being done with their project. There might be an interesting marketing idea just lying around somewhere!
